Solid waste management regulation in the informal settlements: A social-ecological context from Kampala city, Uganda

So far, literature on solid waste management regulation in the informal settlements of Sub-Saharan African cities has yet to enlist social-ecological context. To examine this context, we employ a mixed methods approach collect data regulations and practices Makindye settlements. Our study reveals that multiple are conducted simultaneously by households. Poor socio-economic status, spatial challenges ignorance determine undesirable such as open dumping burning. Desirable sorting or recycling neither merely practiced for monetary gain nor observance regulation. Practices, whether desirable not, acquired through interactions community, where formal rules, well ones, at play. Notably, most residents unaware Kampala city their community. Thus, some engage illegal without inclination commit an offense, while others adopt “community malpractices”. However, relatively more aware rules than ones confirming role socialization. We argue not instinct; therefore, shape values norms, reverse should also be true. Since prevalent conclude policymakers enforcers may have effectively socialized regulatory instruments transform undesired norms. Consequently, norms intrapersonal interpersonal levels influenced behaviors policies enforced government. sensitization initiatives focus socialization structures if responsive conform guidelines better promoted cities.
